The Opening Tip In Monday NBA Play-off Action from James Patrick Sports |
|
|
Boston vs. Cleveland 8:05 p.m. est.
The Cleveland organization felt they improved the team with a major trade to bring in more depth for this years play-off run. Down two games to one, they return to Quicken Loans Arena to take on the Celtics on Monday Night. While LeBron James has had a bad series shooting the ball to this point in this series, his supporting cast has bounced back with an awesome performance on Saturday. We look for the Cavs to win their series home games in style with another big win here.

Marlins vs. Redlegs 7:05 p.m. est.
These teams have lit up the scoreboard for 13.8 runs per game in their match-ups and with Reds starter Harang posting a career 6.55 ERA versus the Fish and his opponent Baddenhopp 0-2 with a 9.00+ ERA in his road starts this season, the math tells us that Over the Total is again the way to Fly.
3* #905 Marlins-Redlegs OVER the TOTAL
Red Sox vs. Twins 7:05 p.m. est.
Minnesota has always been a tough beat in the Twin Cities for the Bosox. Coming into this season, Minnesota had won 6 of 9 from the World Champions. The Red Sox hand the ball to young right hander Bucholtz for this series finale. A 0-3 road record with a 6.23 ERA isn’t very intimidating to his opposing pitcher, Livan Hernandez. Hernandez has found a new home with the Twinkies as he is 4-0 in the HHH Dome with a 3.33 ERA.
Twins are a solid home play here.

Play On: Boston Celtics
Note: The top seeded Celtics take on the Cavaliers at the 'Q' in Cleveland in Game Four of this series knowing a win here tonight all but ends the Cavs chances at pulling the series upset. According to our database the win is a distinct possibility. That's because Cleveland is 1-13 SU and 2-12 ATS in the playoffs of a win 10 or more points, including 1-10 SU and 0-11 ATS if the win was against the same foe. The kicker, though comes from our database, which tells us to: PLAY ON any No. 1 seed in the NBA playoffs off one exact SU and ATS loss we would be 21-8-1 ATS in the playoffs since 1990. When our No. 1 seed is off a loss of 17 or more points in this role they are a perfect 12-0 in this role. Grab the points with the top seeded team here tonight. |

Play On: Seattle w/Bedard vs Padilla
Note: The Mariners send Eric Bedard to the mound against Vicente Padilla in Texas tonight in a right back revenge rematch from Wednesday night when the Rangers edged the M's, 2-0, in Seattle. That loss snapped a personal four-game win streak by Bedard against Texas, dropping him to 4-1 with a 1.29 ERA in his last five team starts versus the Rangers. With Texas 1-7 in last last eight games on Mondays, look for Bedard to get his revenge tonight. Seattle with Bedard vs. Padilla is our American League Game of the Week.

TOM SCOTT'S NBA POWER SYSTEM PLAY • 38-9!
Boston at CLEVELAND - 8:05 PM EST
Play ON: CLEVELAND minus the points
In the last 17 years of NBA Playoff action, this angle has popped up a mere 47 times. That means, you get two, maybe three chances a year to take this powerful system to the window. We will not pass on the opportunity. Even though that angle is enough to get us to the Cleveland side, there are a few other compelling reasons to do so. There is the incredible record of home teams in this round this year. In the 15 games so far, the host team is 14-1 SU and 12-2-1 ATS. There is the miserable performance of the Celtics on the road at playoff time (6-15 SU last 21 and 0-4 SUATS this year without ever scoring over 100 points). There is Cleveland's strong 14-6 home playoff record since LeBron James came to town and there is King James himself. In the first three games of this series, James is 13 of 58 from the floor. That's 22% for a guy who regularly shoots twice that. We think the King explodes tonight and Boston takes its fifth straight road loss.

Play on: (919) Seattle (Bedard) over Texas (Padilla)
As I mentioned in my recent write-ups on this site, Vicente Padilla has improved over his recent years on the diamond with a more effective approach to the overall discipline of pitching. Still, the right hander must face a team in triple revenge and a pitcher (Erik Bedard) up to the task in a road setting. Last week Bedard dropped a 2-0 encounter to Texas with Padilla as the opposing pitcher. Remember, though, Texas is 5-11 in game #1 of a series with Padilla and 0-4 on Monday. Seattle does
normally play down on the road, but the emotional angle is resting with the visiting Mariners, Big Time! |

CLEVELAND over Toronto / GAME ONE of scheduled doubleheader / 4:05pm ET / CARMONA vs Burnett
The Indians continued their home domination of the Blue Jays the first two games of this series outscoring the birds 18-1 in the process. Fausto Carmona takes the hill for the host looking to regain his 2007 form off a rocky start to the season. But Carmona continues to pitch well at home. In four home starts he has allowed just six earned runs in 23.2 innings of work. His familiarity with this mound has been a bonus because he has been horrible on the road. He owns a 2.28 ERA at home and a 7.20 ERA on the road. He will be helped by the strike zone of umpire Andrew Fletcher who has gone 11-3-2 to the under his last 16 games behind the plate.
Toronto has lost three key members to injury this week and their offense is in shambles. In the last 10 games they have scored just 29 runs. AJ Burnett brings a career ERA of 8.46 against the Tribe into today's game. He has been as inconsistent as Carmona thus far this season. The big righty can be dominating at times and yet his inconsistency has been his downfall, that and injuries which have plagued his career.
Cleveland is breaking out of their offensive funk while the Jays are missing their best offensive weapon. The Tribe has dominated Toronto here winning eight straight at home in this series. We simply can't see Toronto scoring enough to reverse the historic trend.

Game:901 Atlanta Braves vs. 902 Pittsburgh Pirates
Game Time: 5/12/2008 3:35:00 PM
Prediction: 901 Atlanta Braves
Game 2 of Double Header -Tim Hudson the Braves starter today against the Pittsburgh Pirates continues to be in top form , as is evident by a 5-2 record and a stingy 2.90 ERA. In his L/2 starts the Braves righty has thrown a three-hit shutout against the Reds, and than in his last outing threw seven strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits in the Braves' 5-2 win vs the Padres. The Pirates are firing back with a pitcher John Van Benschoten who was 0-7 last season for the Pirates in nine starts with a ugly looking 10.15 ERA. This season, he is 0-1 and has allowed two runs in 3 2/3 innings pitching out of the bullpen for a 4.91 ERA. The pitching match up very much favors the Braves today, and I expect that will be the difference maker. Final notes & Key Trends: Pirates are 0-6 in Van Benschotens last 6 starts as an underdog. Braves are 20-6 against the money line when playing with a day off or rain out. #901 Play on the Braves |

I rate my plays 3, 4 & 5 stars. Always play the OTHER SIDE of my game writeups.
1) Boston at Minnesota 7:05 PM ET
3* Red Sox-Twins to go 'UNDER' the total of 9.5 runs (-112)
These two have lit up the scoreboard for 12.3 RPG in the opening 3 games of this series and with a couple of scrubs on the mound tonight, I don't see why the Sox and Twins can't ring up 11-15 runs in the finale. I'm convinced there's NO WAY this game stays below the 9.5 run mark – so your play is on UNDER THE TOTAL.
2) Seattle at Texas 8:05 PM ET
3* (919) SEATTLE (-116)
So the Mariners FINALLY WON A GAME yesterday... does anyone think they can do it again today? I DON'T! The Rangers have been red-hot of late compared to sinking Seattle and Texas should DEFINITELY be the favored team in this matchup! I'll glad put my bucks on the Lone Star home dogs – so your play is on SEATTLE.
3) Houston at San Francisco 10:15 PM ET
3* (912) SAN FRANCISCO (+124)
HUGE comeback win over the Dodgers yesterday should give the Astros plenty of momentum headed into this series with the struggling Giants. It doesn't hurt, either, that Houston will be sending a quality pitcher to the mound (Oswalt) against a WASHED-UP HAS-BEEN (Zito). I'm ALL OVER the Astros to POUND the Bay Area Midgets here – so your play is on SAN FRANCISCO. |

The Cavaliers blew out the Celtics in game three 108-84 but still trail the Celtics 2-1 in the series. Cleveland was dominating once again despite a poor shooting night from LeBron James. James hit just 5 of 16 shots from the floor for a total of 21 points. The big difference in this game was the help that James received from his teammates. The Cavaliers had four other players score in double digits. The Cavaliers have won their last six straight games at home against the Celtics by an average of 11 points per game.
The reality here is that the Celtics have been awful on the road in the playoffs this season. Boston has lost all four games on the road straight up and against the spread. The Celtics have only been blown out in one road playoff game but their defense has been horrendous. The Celtics are giving up an effortless 102.5 points per game. The Cavaliers have covered the spread in their six games as a small favorite of 0.5- 4.5. The Celtics have struggled on the road against teams with a winning home record failing to cover the spread in their last four and are 1-5 ATS in conference semifinal games. Take the Cavaliers to even up the series behind a big game from LeBron James. Play 2 units. |

#918 Tampa Bay (Garza) – over New York (Pettitte) 7:10 PM ET
Tampa Bay is 13-7 at home and is a few games up on the .500 Yankees in the standings. Rays starter Matt Garza had marginal results in April for but his two starts in May have been outstanding with just three runs allowed over nearly 13 innings. Tampa Bay is 10-1 in the last eleven home games while the Yankees are 2-8 in the last ten games as a favorite. The Rays are currently on a four-game win streak and the Rays lineup compares favorably with New York and the surprising Tampa bullpen has been one of the best in the league. Andy Pettitte has had very average results this season and New York has lost his last three outings. Pettitte has given up five home runs in his last three starts and Tampa Bay had nine hits against him the last time they lined up. Look for the hot Rays to keep rolling against the overvalued Yankees.

Game: 915 Toronto Blue Jays vs. 916 Cleveland Indians
Game Time: 5/12/2008 7:05:00 PM
Prediction:916 Cleveland Indians with LEE in GAME TWO of scheduled double-header
The Cleveland Indians starting pitcher today Cliff Lee( 6-0, 0.81 ERA) is in red hot form to start his season . He extended his streak of consecutive innings without a walk to 28 and held foes scoreless three times this season. Opposition offenses are batting just .163 of him this season. The Jays struggling offense, that is hitting just 2.7 RPG , on a lowly .223 BA against southpaws like Lee this season. Even though the Jays are also sending a hot pitcher(Shaun Marcum) to the hill, I still like the Tribes home field advantage and the superior offense to add to Lees dominance against just about any opponent at the moment. Final notes & Key Trends: The Indians have won 8 straight meetings here in Ohio. Indians are 9-1 in their last 10 second games of a double-header . Blue Jays are 1-7 in their last 8 road games vs. a team with a losing home record .916 Play on the Indians |

Game:515 Boston Celtics vs.516 Cleveland Cavaliers
Game Time: 5/12/2008 8:00:00 PM
Prediction:515 Boston Celtics
Boston has been beaten up on in all 4 playoff away games they have played this season, after winning 31 of 41 during the regular season . Thats very straonge for this talented of team, that were potent visitors this season, beating almost everywhere, including San Antonio, Houston and Dallas to win consecutive games in a rare Texas sweep. Needless to say the veterans of this team, will now want to make a concerted effort of regaining some swagger on the road ,before this trend gets out of hand, and leads to their demise. When a dangerous team like the Celtics puts their minds to it, good but not great teams like the Cavs, better watch out. Final notes & Key Trends: Boston is a perfect 9-0 ATS in a road game where where the total is between 180 and 184.5 points. #515 Play on Boston |

#516 Cleveland – over Boston 8:05 PM ET
Boston is 0-4 in road games in the playoffs and the Celtics have shown major weakness and also been unable to hold on to leads. The Cavs have been dominant in home games this postseason sans a one point miraculous loss to Washington but Cleveland is the defending conference champion and the Cavs have been a very tough out at home in the playoffs. Cleveland won both regular season meetings at home and the home team has won eight straight in this series. Boston’s great defense has disappeared in road games this season and the Cavaliers own one of the best home records in the NBA over the past three years. LeBron James is still the best player on the court and after his well documented struggles in the first two games he is due for a monster performance. He also used his teammates effectively in game 3 as four other players scored in double-figures. The Cavs shot exceptionally well in game 3 but Boston did not play that poorly on the offensive end yet still could not keep pace. Look for the same results today as the home teams continue to dominate in round 2.

1* (Regular Play) Boston Celtics (+) @ Cleveland @ 8:05 ET - The Celtics are coming off of an embarrassing effort at Cleveland on Saturday. In that loss, the Celtics got off to a horrific start and buried themselves in the first quarter. Certainly, credit is due to the Cavaliers for their solid effort in that game. However, also note that, even though Boston is now 0-4 on the road in these playoffs, this was the first time the Celtics have been blown out in this postseason. That said, we are looking for a big response from the Celtics here. They didn't just lose in Game Three, they got crushed. The Celtics have been constantly hearing about how bad their road woes have been in this postseason. Now, it's time for the response.
Even though Boston lost badly on Saturday, they still did another great job on LeBron James as they have held him in check throughout this series. Amazingly it was all the other Cavaliers, sans James, that produced the big game on Monday. When taking out LeBron James numbers from the equation, the Cavs shot over 60% from the field. That type of performance is not going to be repeated here. The Celtics take great pride in their defense and, after a poor effort on Saturday, there will be a big bounce back from the Boston defense today. Again, even though Boston is supposedly "use" to losing on the road in this postseason, they had been "in" every road game they had played until this ridiculous loss in Game Three.
Every road game in the series with Atlanta, the Celtics were in the game in the fourth quarter but every time they came up just short. This impacted their resolve to get better on the road as it didn't seem like they had played so poorly...just simply that they had come up short. Now, after Saturday's disaster, the Celtics will bring the best road effort they have so far in this postseason and that means it's time for a solid road win. Play Boston plus the points as a regular selection. |

Scott Rickenbach's OVER the Top Slugfest |
|
|
1* (regular play) OVER the total in Texas vs Seattle @ 8:05 ET - Padilla vs Bedard - On the surface, when doing a quick "read" on this game, the reaction is certainly not going to be one that demands an "over". However, the key in handicapping is often uncovering the "little" factors that often lead to "big" line value and that is precisely the case here with this play. These teams just met in Seattle and only two of the four games went over the total. The lowest scoring game in the series was the one where these two pitchers squared off in a 2-0 Rangers win. However, playing in Texas is a lot different than in the heavy air of Safeco Field in the Pacific Northwest. The ball carries much better at Texas and the Mariners are finally starting to hit the ball better. After two of Seattle's four games with the Rangers stayed under, two of the Mariners last three games (with the White Sox) went over the total and they will enjoy hitting in a hitter-friendly ballpark in Texas. Yes, the Mariners are without Richie Sexson for this game but that is not a big loss when you look at his recent numbers against Texas pitching. Also, Vicente Padilla gets the start for the Rangers tonight and he's got solid numbers so far this season. However, he has only made two starts at home this season and it will be much tougher for him here against the Mariners than it was up in Seattle. Although he shutout the Twins in a complete game effort in his most recent home start, he did struggle in his only other home start this season as he allowed four earned runs in six innings against the Blue Jays. The Rangers bullpen also got crushed in yesterday's 12 to 6 loss to Oakland and the Texas relievers' ERA ranks them as worst among all 30 MLB teams. Each of the Rangers last two games have gone over the total and have totalled 28 runs. Keep in mind that we're getting fantastic line value on this total simply because Padilla and Erik Bedard of the Mariners both are off to solid starts this season. However, pitching in Texas is different than in many parks. With a total of 8.5 on all 17 of their home games this season note that the Texas home games would be 13-4 to the over. Keep in mind that the Mariners bullpen also ranks in the lower third of the league. That said, if Bedard struggles here like we feel he will we'll also get some bullpen help with our over. Bedard had a fantastic start here last season but his prior starts in Texas were not so impressive and his numbers on the road have not been as impressive as they've been at home in recent seasons. Bedard has allowed 15 homers in his last 17 road starts and the Rangers slugging percentage at home this season is ranked 2nd in the American League. While the rest of the world watches in shock, we'll sit back and enjoy watching these "prized" hurlers struggle in hitter-friendly Texas. Play OVER the total in Texas as a regular selection. |

The Minnesota Twins will look to take the World Champion Boston Red Sox down when they the final game of a four game series on ESPN 7:05 EST. This selection is based on the listed pitchers. Clay Buchholz (2-2, 4.50 ERA) will take the mound for Boston while Livan Hernandez (5-1, 3.83 ERA). The Twins have been stellar when Hernandez takes the mound winning seven of eight starts. The Twins have won nine of their last 10 games. The Twins have been very supportive of Hernandez scoring eight runs a game when he takes the mound. The Red Sox have lost Buchholz’s last five road starts and will be hard pressed to win in Minnesota where they are 2-12. Take the hot Twins here for 1 unit. |
